Village welcomes full crossing guard roster for new school year
Updated Sept. 25, 2026
ALDEN — School is back in session and school zones are once again busy intersections. Students heading to class are now greeted by a fully staffed team watching over the crosswalks, which had been understaffed for many months as the Village struggled to fill crossing guard positions.
Closing a staffing gap before the first day of school was a priority for the Village of Alden. At the Aug. 25 Village Board meeting, trustees officially appointed Jerry and Jill Kania to join the crossing guard roster, effective Sept. 1. They join returning guard Pam Comstock, who is back at her post helping village students travel safely to and from school for the 2026–27 academic year.
Mayor Michael Retzlaff commended the proactive effort, praising the board for filling the essential roles ahead of the student rush. Trustee Theron Kibbe echoed that appreciation, acknowledging the school district for coordinating on post needs and thanking Village Clerk Ashley Kaluzny for handling the appointment paperwork quickly to ensure everything was in place by opening day.
With the full roster now on duty, the village is asking local motorists to do their part by offering extra patience, care, and a warm wave as everyone settles into the autumn morning routine.
Drivers are especially reminded to remain alert and courteous in school zones and give crossing guards and students plenty of space. Remember car horns should only be used to alert other drivers or pedestrians of danger.
The apointment of Jerry and Jill Kania and the full staffing of crossing guards positions ensures Alden’s children have dedicated, friendly guides keeping village corners safe every morning and afternoon. Slow down, keep an eye out for the yellow vests, and help give our crossing guards a smooth, community-supported start to the school year.
